ASCUS HPV can progress to cervical cancer and be treated by cone biopsy in some cases.
Human papilloma virus is believed to have a major role in cervical dysplasia. Pap smears in which both these results are present are more likely to progress to a more severe grade of dysplasia. Most scientific investigators now believe that human papilloma virus causes dysplasia and cervical cancer.

These terms may appear in a diagnosis from pap smear results meaning that abnormal squamous cells along with human papilloma virus are present in the specimen.
