Leep Procedures - Reasons for a LEEP Procedure
A LEEP procedure may be recommend after a recent Pap smear, where your doctor has determined that you have a disorder of the uterine cervix (the entrance to the womb). This disorder, called Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN), is a change in the surface cells of the cervix. The presence of CIN does not mean that you have cancer, but detection and treatment of CIN is important to avoid the possible development of cervical cancer.
CIN is a lesion of abnormal cells typically associated with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). When HPV is contracted, it infects the cells of the transformation zone of the cervix. The transformation zone is the area of cervical tissue where the cells actively divide and grow. As these cells grow and mature, they are pushed to the surface as new cells are produced and the older, outside cells die and are shed. When the virus infects the cell and then becomes active, abnormal cells begin to be produced in the transformation zone and a lesion develops.
Removal of the lesion through a LEEP procedure is an effective treatment for CIN. Although HPV remains once the CIN lesion is removed, the rate of recurrence of CIN is quite low since the removal of the transformation zone eliminates the tissue most susceptible to CIN.

Leep Procedures - Who is a candidate for the procedure?
This procedure is done on women whose Pap smears show abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix. These changes may lead to cancer. The most appropriate candidates for LEEP are women with so-called high-grade changes, which represent very disorganized areas of tissue in the cervix.
LEEP is not done on women who have cancer that has already invaded the cervix.
Leep Procedures - How is the procedure performed?
LEEP only takes a few minutes. Usually, it is done in the office of a healthcare provider.
First, the cervix is injected with a local anesthetic and medication that makes the blood vessels contract to avoid blood loss. The wire loop is then passed across the cervix. It removes the area between the outer and inner portion of the cervix, which is called the transformation zone. Most cervical problems develop in this area.
The wire loop cuts and seals the tissue it passes through. The size of the piece removed depends on the size of the wire loop used.
The tissue sample is then sent to the lab to be examined under the microscope.
